Confirmation

Sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit

Confirmation is the second of the three Sacraments of Initiation in the Catholic Church. Through this sacrament, the baptized are enriched with the special strength of the Holy Spirit, binding them more perfectly to the Church and strengthening them to witness to Christ by word and deed.

The ordinary minister of Confirmation is the bishop, who administers the sacrament through the laying on of hands and anointing with sacred chrism oil, invoking the presence of the Holy Spirit upon the confirmand. This powerful encounter echoes the grace of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles.

Preparation for Confirmation

Preparation for Confirmation is essential to help candidates understand the significance of the sacrament and to deepen their relationship with Christ and the Church. As outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

"Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit—his actions, his gifts, and his biddings—in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life."

— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1309

Candidates must be in a state of grace, having received the Sacrament of Penance, and should engage in more intense prayer to receive the strength and graces of the Holy Spirit with readiness to act.
